David

I'm not at my computer at the moment but saw your tweet and since read the blog.

I appreciate that my involvement in the fight against Article 4 regulations and lobbying Hull City Council is not known by all, I left the specifics off my nomination form purely due to the less than half A4 space available to talk about yourself and your policies.

Since coming into the role of Chair Campaigns and Democracy at the start of September, I ,,,jumped straight into the problem regarding housing legislation as my first campaign.

I personally contacted all members of the Council and the Cabinet (who took the decision and vote which lead to a six month decision making period instead of direct implementation of the policy process), collected signatories to a decision which triggered a speech to full Council, organised meetings and spoke at length with Council, Cabinet and Group Leaders of Hull CC which lead to increased publicity and support for students. A student body which had not been consulted through either the University and HUU and was previously unrepresented in an issue that would directly affect them.

I stated in my manifesto, as you quoted, that I saw being at the forefront of this issue as being amongst my proudest. Being sat at the front row of the audience whilst the Cabinet debated and voted on this important issue was inspiring, as we saw ideas, statistics, opinions and methods of improvement that we had put forward discussed and argued for by Cabinet members that we had been able to talk to. It also showed how much more we have to do to demonstrate to the community, local residents and Hull CC the positive impact students have and have always had to the local area.

I apologise if you feel that I had not adequately backed this up and hope that it has since been elaborated on.
When back at my computer I will find necessary documents and papers to back this up if you so wish.

I hope that this has cleared things up,
Kora-Lee :)

Thanks for your comment about Kora-Lee. It has certainly provided me with some additional information. I am aware of what Tom has done on this issue, but I wasn't sure about the level of Kora-Lee's involvement.

However, despite your information, I am not going to change the text of the blog. If people read the comments section now, they will find the information that you've provided. If I changed the entry, your comment would make no sense.

As for your point about contacting candidates, I did consider this before I started doing this series. The thing is, when I have attempted this in the past, not all the candidates have responded. Without responses from everyone, it could make posts appear unbalanced.

However, as is always the case with my blog, I leave the posts open to comments. I also send tweets to the candidates inviting them to respond to any of the points in my posts. This has proved effective so far, as I have had responses from multiple candidates and it has lead to a worthwhile dialogue.

Despite your claim, Kora-Lee Holmes has done a lot with housing as Chair Campaigns and Democracy this year.

Kora-Lee has, along with current VP Community Tom Peel, been HUU's voice in the opposition to Article 4, helping to present the student case to Hull City Council. Had it not been for their work, Article 4 may well have passed before Christmas, meaning the systematic destruction of our current student communities. As it turned out they bought more time to convince the Council, hence the introduction of the Street Rep system.

Please change the blog to reflect this, and could you at least contact candidates before you write about them and then you would maybe have all the facts.

As someone who has been around far too long, I'd be interested to know exactly how candidates plan to deliver wifi at the lawns, and the free cash machine here.
Wardens have been pushing for wifi for the past couple of years, but its fallen on deaf ears at the university.
People have been campaigning for the cash machine since at least the 2004 elections, and no one has delivered it yet!

Interesting posts Dave, keep up the good work :)

Having already had meetings with Paul Andrews (Scheme administrator) and Jill Cooper (head of the Accommodation office) I have aired my views on The Scheme and actively engaged in obtaining feedback on how or even if my ideas could come into fruition should I win. I've successfully secured backing from Paul and have Jill quoted as saying she would work with me to push the University to fund a reformed Scheme, putting students at the heart of it, in line with the University's current strategic plan. The outgoing Chief financial officer was supportive of this, so it'd just be a case of persuading the new one to provide us with the (roughly) £50,000 we'd need to fund the new Scheme which I doubt would be hard considering Accommodation is now the 3rd thing potential students look for when choosing a University.
On ClubEasy you're right; it looks as if HUU has a bias towards them and you're also right it'd leave a funding gap if removed. It says in my full manifesto (check my fb group) that I wouldn't just end the deal, but wait untill its up for renewal in a year and simply just choose not to renew it. This would give me a year to work with the amazing HUU management team (which by this point will include a full time marketing manager) to source the funds from elsewhere, other sponsorships etc. I also gave a more specific example when asked at Scarborough hustings.
As for my experience, you're right I am probably the least experienced out of the three, but what does show is that from the experience I do have I can produce results. In my time as a voluntary street rep (5 months) I've got Hull city Council to commit to doubling their resources to the Scheme meaning they will now do 100 house inspections a year, up from 50. Needless to say along with this I have multiple councillors backing my ideas to reform it as well! Hope this helps.

Thanks for clearing this point up.

I didn't realise this because it wasn't mentioned on your nomination form. I see that there's a mention of it in your Facebook group, but I only went there for additional information about your policies.

Hey just a note on experience, in my second year of university I was a councillor of scrutiny and became Chair of the Education zone, I was also NUS Delegate last year and voted on Higher Education Policy, which if you would like I can dig out my notes on how I voted and you can still read the blog I wrote for the event on HullStudent.com

I wouldn't say Doms the least experienced - he's worked on the bars for three years and been made team leader. I think he's also a street rep

Victoria was very active as a Councillor of Scrutiny for the Education Zone in 2010/11 (I was the other CoS on the Zone) - that gives her some strong experience in the education sector, especially since Matt Barrow was such a good VP Education to be scrutinising.
